a bit about the therapist . . .

What does LMHC stand for?
LMHC stands for Licensed Mental Health Counselor. That means I have a masters
degree and through work experience and supervision I have been licensed by the State
of Florida to practice counseling.

What’s the difference between a counselor, psychologist & a psychiatrist?
The field of counseling includes professionals with many different credentials. A
psychiatrist is someone who is a medical doctor. Typically a psychiatrist will prescribe medication for mental health disorders and follow-up with that person over the course of taking the meds. A psychologist holds a doctorate degree, performs counseling and/or psychological testing but cannot prescribe medication. A counselor or psychotherapist usually has a masters degree, performs counseling but does not prescribe medication. A counselor or psychotherapist can hold a masters degree in
counseling, social work or marriage and family therapy.

My Approach
I follow a theory of counseling called Cognitive-Behavioral therapy. The basic premise of this theory is that we are influenced by our thoughts and behaviors through our experience and how we react to that experience. Results can be gained when thoughts and behaviors are changed and/or modified. If you have any further questions about this theory I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Some techniques I use are changing negative thought patterns through distraction and/or thought replacement. I also incorporate the use of gratitude in my interventions. This powerful tool can be instrumental in changing thought and behavior patterns from negative to positive with strong reinforcement.

My Experience
I have a Masters and a Specialist degree in mental health counseling from Florida State University and through work experience and supervision I have been licensed by the State of Florida to practice counseling. I have over 13 years experience in the mental health field providing individual, couples and family therapy. I am Board Certified in Professional Counseling and am a member of the American Psychotherapy Association as well as the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce. My work experience has exposed me to several mental health arenas including the Juvenile Justice System, nonprofit community mental health facilities, substance abuse facilities, medical facilities, inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities and employee assistance programs. I have been in private practice for 3 years. I am married and have 3 children.

My Specialty
Through the experience of working and being a mother coupled with my background in counseling, I specialize in helping busy mothers who feel overwhelmed and
unappreciated begin to reclaim their self esteem without guilt. For more information
